Our atelier

A Woodstock workshop where old furniture is made new

Mbali Interiors Atelier is a small, Black-owned upholstery and soft-furnishings workshop in Woodstock, Cape Town. We strip furniture back to the frame, rebuild it properly and recover it in the fabric you choose, so a piece worth keeping can last another generation.

We also make curtains, blinds, cushions and headboards to order. Everything is measured, cut, sewn and finished by hand in the atelier, by the people you meet when you first walk in.

What we make

Handmade for your home

  • Reupholstery

Sofas, armchairs and dining chairs stripped, rebuilt and recovered in the fabric you choose. Quoted per piece.

  • Curtains and blinds

Made-to-measure curtains, roman blinds and pelmets, sewn and hung to fit your windows.

  • Cushions and soft furnishings

Scatter cushions, seat pads and throws made to order to pull a room together.

  • Headboards and beds

Upholstered headboards and bed bases built and covered to your size and style.

How it works

Four steps, start to finish

  • Consult

We visit or meet to understand the piece, the room and the look you want.

  • Measure and quote

We measure, assess the frame and help you choose fabric, then quote clearly.

  • Make

We strip, rebuild and hand-finish your piece in the Woodstock atelier.

  • Fit

We deliver and fit, and make sure it sits right before we leave.

Why choose us

Craft you can live with

We quote clearly before we start, rebuild every frame properly rather than just covering over the old, and hand you back a piece made to last. You deal with the makers throughout.

  • We agree fabric, timeline and price up front, and quote clearly before we start.
  • Every frame is repaired and rebuilt properly, not simply recovered over the old.
  • You deal directly with the makers who cut, sew and finish your piece.
