How to Search for a BEE Certificate

A BEE certificate search means you want to find or verify the B-BBEE certificate of a South African company. There is no single government website where all BEE certificates are stored in one searchable database. You search by asking the company directly, checking the website of the verification agency that issued the certificate, or using private B-BBEE databases run by rating agencies.

If you are a business owner in a township trying to win a tender or supply a big company, you will be asked for your own BEE certificate. If you are checking someone else's certificate, you want to confirm it is real and not expired.

What Is a BEE Certificate

A BEE certificate is a document that shows your company's B-BBEE status. It is issued by an accredited verification agency after they assess your business. The certificate shows your scorecard level, from Level 1 (best) to Level 8, or it may show that you are a non-compliant entity.

There are different types of certificates depending on your company size. EMEs (exempt micro enterprises with a turnover below a certain threshold) get an affidavit instead of a full certificate. QSEs (qualifying small enterprises) and large enterprises go through a full verification process.

Where to Search for a Company's BEE Certificate

There is no central government database for BEE certificates. Here is how you can search:

  1. Ask the company directly. This is the most reliable way. Email or call the company and request a copy of their current BEE certificate.
  1. Check the verification agency's website. Some agencies publish a list of clients they have certified. You can search the agency name found on the certificate to see if the company appears.
  1. Use private B-BBEE databases. Some websites collect and publish BEE certificates. These are not official government sources, so always verify the information with the issuing agency.
  1. Check the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) website. SANAS accredits verification agencies. You can confirm that the agency named on a certificate is legitimately accredited.

How to Verify a BEE Certificate Is Real

Once you have a certificate in your hands, you need to check that it is genuine. Fake BEE certificates are a real problem in South Africa, and submitting a fake one can ruin your chances with a tender.

Check the following:

  • The verification agency must be SANAS accredited. Go to the SANAS website and search for the agency name.
  • The certificate must have a unique certificate number. You can call the agency and ask them to confirm that number.
  • The certificate must not be expired. BEE certificates are valid for 12 months from the issue date. Check the issue and expiry dates printed on the certificate.
  • The company name and registration number on the certificate must match what is on the CIPC records. You can do a free CIPC company search online to confirm.
  • The signature and stamp of the verification agency must be present.

If anything looks off, contact the verification agency directly. Do not rely on the word of the company alone.

How to Get Your Own BEE Certificate

If you need your own BEE certificate for tenders or to supply other businesses, the process depends on your company size.

For EMEs (Small Businesses)

If your annual turnover is below the threshold set for your industry, you qualify as an EME. You do not need a full verification. You simply swear an affidavit stating your turnover level and your black ownership percentage. This affidavit acts as your BEE certificate. It is free and you can get it commissioned at any police station or commissioner of oaths.

For QSEs and Large Enterprises

If your turnover is above the EME threshold, you must use a SANAS accredited verification agency. The agency will assess your business across the B-BBEE scorecard elements, which include ownership, management control, skills development, enterprise and supplier development, and socio-economic development. They will issue a certificate based on your score.

The process involves gathering documents, submitting them to the agency, undergoing a verification audit, and receiving your certificate. This can take several weeks and costs money, so budget for it.

Why a BEE Certificate Matters for Tenders

Most government tenders and large corporate supply contracts require a valid BEE certificate. If you are registering on the Central Supplier Database (CSD) for government work, you will need to provide your BEE status. Without it, you may lose points or be disqualified entirely.

A good BEE certificate can give you a competitive edge. Many big companies prefer suppliers with better BEE levels because it improves their own B-BBEE scorecard through procurement spend.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Letting your certificate expire. Mark the expiry date on your calendar and start the renewal process at least two months before it lapses.
  • Using a non-accredited agency. Only SANAS accredited agencies can issue valid certificates. A certificate from an unaccredited agency is worthless.
  • Faking an affidavit. Swearing a false affidavit is a criminal offence. Be honest about your turnover and ownership.
  • Ignoring the scorecard elements. If you are a QSE, you can improve your level by investing in skills development and supplier development, not just ownership.
